New Law In Italy Says All Supermarkets Should Give Unsold Foods To The Needy

181 senators in Italy have passed a bill that encourages families to use a "doggy bag" to take home unfinished food after eating outside of their homes. The new law is passed to reduce the amount of food wasted in the country each year.

The food waste is costing business and households more than €12 billion, and the goal of the new law is to reduce 5 tonnes of food wasted each year to 1 tonne. The bill was only opposed by a senator while the other senator abstained from it.

Just three months ago, the country also ruled that stealing a small amount of food is not a crime, and the new law will also make food donation easier by allowing businesses record their donation on a simple form every month.

Also the Agricultural MINISTRY will also start a "doggy bag" campaign to encourage families to take away their unfinished food away from restaurants or whenever they eat outside.

According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), food wasted in Europe could feed 200million people.
