Daily Mail News Outlet Branded Fake News By Wikipedia

Online encyclopaedia  giant, Wikipedia, have labelled Daily Mail as an "Unreliable source" due to its "reputation for poor fact checking and sensationalism"

Wikepedia, which does not approve or disapprove news outlet before now had been investigating Daily mail since early 2015. The investigation is done by the volunteer editors in Wikipedia, and had released a statement to their findings, it reads;

Based on the requests for comments section [on the reliable sources noticeboard], volunteer editors on English Wikipedia have come to a consensus that the Daily Mail is ‘generally unreliable and its use as a reference is to be generally prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist’.

This means that the Daily Mail will generally not be referenced as a ‘reliable source’ on English Wikipedia, and volunteer editors are encouraged to change existing citations to the Daily Mail to another source deemed reliable by the community. This is consistent with how Wikipedia editors evaluate and use media outlets in general – with common sense and caution.

The proposal to label the news outlet was started by an editor known as Hillbillyholiday, and why different editors have supported the move, some of the editors have opposed the motion, and said why some news on Daily Mail might not be reliable, other publications make the gaffe,citing the news outlet and their blunders.

The editors not supporting the move also believe it was done because of the dislike for the Daily Mail publication, and not what they do.

While summarising the discussion of the editors, Wikipedia editor wrote;

Consensus has determined that the Daily Mail (including its online version dailymail.co.uk) is generally unreliable, and its use as a reference is to be generally prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist. As a result, the Daily Mail should not be used for determining notability, nor should it be used as a source in articles. An edit filter should be put in place, going forward to warn editors attempting to use the Daily Mail as a reference.

Wikipedia has now asked for volunteers to remove and replace over 12,000 Daily Mail links, and replace them with a reliable source wherever  possible.
