The police officer was taken away to the hospital for emergency surgery for her stab wound. She was also hit by a stray bullet, but she is said to be "out of danger". Paramedics at the scene tried saving Rafik's life, but he died on his way to the hospital.

Rafik is a member of the Ansar al-Islam, a jihadist group linked to Al-Qaeda. After his arrest and conviction for the assassination plot, he was sentenced to eight years in prison, but was released early and was allowed to stay in Germany, but had to wear an electronic tag.

People have speculated that Rafik Y might be mentally ill, but after his previous record was released to the public, it was believed he had only carried out an act of terror, and probably in a rush to meet the "promised virgins in heaven".
