Tragedy has struck the people of Quang Ngai on the 15th of April after a news went around around 2pm of nine grade six students who had drowned in the Tra Khuc River. The boys aged around 11 years were swimming in the river as a relief to the hot weather.

According to eyewitness account, Tran Thi Ha Phuong, a classmate said that he had seen the boys struggling in the river, but had thought they were playing, and after some time they noticed that the boys had disappeared and called for help.

Local people and rescue workers rushed to the scene to save the boys, but it was too late as the boys were already dead. A local diver who had helped according to local media said the student bodies "piling up on one another's" on the river bed, about 3 metres deep.
The bodies of the students were all recovered around 3:20pm local time.
