Police In Vietnam Shot A Drunken Man Who Dipped 13-Day-old Baby Inside Water Tank

Major Le Minh Chanh, chief police officer of Duong Dong Town shot a man, Nguyen Van Huu, 26, of Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc Island District in the abdomen after he dipped a 13-day-old baby into a water tank.

The Story

Around 2:45am, Nguyen Van Huu came home shouting at the top of his voice that neighbours should open the door so he could talk to them, but they denied him entry, so he moved on and knocked on the door of Truong Thi Cam Ly, 23, and Truong Viet Hung, Ly’s younger brother, who opened the door to the drunken man.

After he gained entry, he destroyed the house furniture, and ordered that all doors and windows be closed, or he would go ahead and kill everyone. 

He then entered into the room of Ly's bedroom and grab her 13 day old baby by the legs, and carelessly swing the baby. Just like every mother, Ly rushed to Huu to stop him, but she was overpowered by the drunken Huu, who grabbed a piece of brick and hit her several times on the head, causing her to faint.

He then shouted at everyone not to move, or he would go ahead and kill everyone.

While Huu was yelling at everyone, Ly's father sneaked through the back door and called the police to intervene. The police were at the place and persuaded the young man to let the baby go, but he refused.

Around 5:00am, Huu took the baby by her leg, and took her to a water tank in front of the house, this time, the police fired a warning shot into the air, warning Huu to let the baby go, instead he dropped the baby into the water tank.

To be able to save the baby in due time, Major Le Minh Chanh, chief police officer shot Huu in the abdomen, allowing passage for the chief and his men to help save Ly's baby.

The baby was taken and the mother was taken away to the Phuoc Quoc General Hospital.

Ly and his baby are currently being treated, but also in a stable condition, while Huu died around 8:30am the same day.

Speaking on the incident, the Police chief told a local newspaper, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that he had acted the right way, and he took the action right from his heart.

The lawyer of Kien Giang bar association, Doan Cong Thien also supported Minh Chanh shooting, and said that the law enforcement agents can use their weapon if a victim life is threatened.
