London has elected its first ever Muslim mayor,Sadiq Khan on Friday night. Sadiq defeated Zac Goldsmith in the recent election while amassing the total vote of 1,310,143 and Zac with 994,614.
Sadiq is a member of the centre-left labour party, and will replace the out-going mayor, Boris Johnson, who was a conservative together with Zac Goldsmith.
Sadiq, son of a Pakistani immigrant, worked as a human rights lawyer before becoming a politician. He was elected member of the parliament in 2005, and 2009-2010, served as the first Muslim to serve as transport minister in Gordon's Brown cabinet.
