In a broadcast on state television, the man who led Gambia for 22 years said;

I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation with infinite gratitude to all Gambians.

Jammeh after accepting the election result of Adama Barrow on December 1st via state broadcast denies the result, calling for re-election in the country, a move that had caused panic among Gambians, and 46,000 Gambians had fled the country to neighbouring countries as they fear a major unrest.

The new president in an interview with Al-Jazeera said that Jammeh will need to leave his country, as his presence in the Gambia poses a lot of risk to the people. While negotiating with ECOWAS on Thursday, Jammeh asked that he be allowed to stay in Gambia,at his home village of Kanilai, but the request was denied by Marcel Alain de Souza, head of ECOWAS.

Barrow said the people of Gambia would only come back to the country when they know he is no longer in the Gambia picture.\

Just a week after he was praised around the world for accepting defeat in the election, the Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh has surprised the world when he turned around once again and rejects the December 1 election result.

In a video released by the Gambian media, Mr Jammeh has cited irregularities in the election, and called for a fresh poll, without the foreign influence,and also to make sure all Gambians voted.

Mr Jameh has been ruling the country for 22 years, but lost to the opposition candidate, Adama Barrow. The newly president-elect released a press statement, asking the incumbent leader respect the will of the people, and also accuse Mr Jammeh of damaging the country's democracy.

The international community have reacted to Mr Jammeh election annulment. The US and Senegal have condemned Mr Jammeh, and the African Union  called for a "peaceful and orderly transition of power".

The results of the country's election were revised by the electoral commission on December 5 after it emerged that the ballots for one of the area were added incorrectly, swelling Mr Barrow's vote.

According to the commission, the error added votes to other candidates' votes, but "has not changed the status quo" of the result.

Yahya Jammeh rejected the whole election results "in totality"

While the US election was shocking to the world, Yahya Jammeh conceding election to  Adama Barrow was another shock, not only to Gambians, but to other African nations.

Yahya Jammeh has been portrayed by the media as a political thug and corrupt leader in the Gambia, and many had thought he would change the course or result of the election, one of the reasons his opponent had waited before accepting his victory.

Instead Jammeh called the newly elected President, Adama Barrow, and congratulated him on the election. He then went ahead and offer the hand of friendship and also of advise to the newly elected leader.

Jammeh had ruled the country for 22 years.
