The Mexico government is declaring a 3-days mourning for the victims of the 7.1 earthquake that rocked the state limit between the states Puebla and Morelos, about 7.4 miles southeast of Axochiapan, Morelos and 74.5 miles from Mexico City.
According to the National Coordinator of Civil Protection, Luis Felipe Puente, the death toll of the result of the earthquake is now 248. The epicentres of the earthquakes were in Axochiapan, Morelos, and Chiautla, Puebla. Mexico city sees the highest death toll of 117, while Morelos reported that 55 people have died in the earthquake.
According to a volunteer rescue worker, Pedro Serrano, 29 years old,while speaking to reporters said;
We managed to get into a collapsed classroom. We saw some chairs and wooden tables. The next thing we saw was a leg, and then we started to move rubble and we found a girl and two adults — a woman and a man.
Serrano also said that 25 people were found dead at the Enrique Rebsamen school, and said 21 were children and four adults. 24 students in the same were also rescued and were taken to the hospital for care.
According to the National Seismic Service, Mexico is an area of high seismicity due to the interaction of 5 plates tectonics: The plate of North America, the one of Cocos, the one of the Pacific, the plate of Rivera and the plaque of the Caribbean. The National Seismic Service reports that at least 40 earthquakes happen each day.
According to current information, 41 building have collapsed in the earthquakes.
